WAPPA FACES CHALLENGES HEAD ON
WAPPA President, Graeme Dent.
Low winter rainfall, potential high feed prices and a revived live auction system were just some of the issues addressed by the WA Pork Producers' Association (WAPPA) during its annual general meeting last Friday, September 1.
WAPPA President Graeme Dent of Cuballing thanked the WA Meat Industry Authority and Primaries for accommodating small producers with a live auction system.
Mr Dent also welcomed Wannamal producer Steve Martin to WAPPA's Executive Committee.
Mr Martin who replaced retiring past-President Stuart Coole of Boyup Brook, joins Mr Dent and Vice-President Richard Evison of Albany, Treasurer Errol Howard of Wannamal and Darren Edwards of Popanyinning.
Presenting his President's report to about 30 producers and others at Pastoral House, Mr Dent said WAPPA had reviewed its strategic plan and condensed it into a practical document to progress the industry.
"The Executive has dealt with the many challenges it has faced, while working co-operatively with stakeholders to improve industry standards in the areas of quality assurance, carcase grading, animal welfare and production costs."
However, Mr Dent added that the biggest hurdle facing the industry was feed prices.
Enjoying the 2006 WAPPA dinner are WA Minister of Agriculture and Food, Kim Chance and wife Sue and WAPPA President, Graeme Dent and wife Belinda of Cuballing.

WAPPA BACKS QA ALL THE WAY
With eating quality and food safety the two key drivers of pork consumption in WA, the WA Pork Producers’
Association (WAPPA) has again reminded producers of the importance of implementing the Australian Pork Industry
Quality Assurance (APIQ) program.
Speaking last Friday after WAPPA’s first general meeting for 2006, Cuballing producer and President, Graeme Dent,
said the industry was best served by supporting best practice management in biosecurity, animal health and welfare
and food safety through APIQ.
The WAPPA meeting was attended by about 30 producers and was followed by a Cost of Production seminar presented
by producer and veterinarian, Dr Chris Brennan of Portec Australia.
He said producers simply had to know their cost of production.
His take-home message was that fixed costs reduce with volume increases and variable costs reduce with efficiency
improvements, such as buying better, improving feed conversion and implementing better operating systems.
At the WAPPA General Meeting were WAPPA President, Graeme Dent of Cuballing and Colin Goldsmith of Pingelly.
